David, as the author writing the book we are reading, offers one last glimpse of the people whom he lives among and cherishes.

There's his aunt who is over 80 years old but who is still energetic enough to take 6-mile daily walks even in winter weather.

There's David's old nurse Peggotty who now wears eyeglasses and who continues to do needlework every night.

There's Mr. Dick who often occupies himself by making and flying kites, all the while telling David that he will eventually finish writing his Memorial.

There is Mrs. Steerforth who wonders whether David has reconciled with her son only to seek solace from Rosa Dartle when she realizes her son is dead.

There is Julia Mills who has returned from India wealthy, and with a husband to boot,on account of which she lives in style though whether she is happier for it is debatable.

There is Doctor Strong who is happy working at his dictionary and who loves his youthful wife Mrs. Strong more than ever and vice versa.

There are Traddles and Sophy who remain true to their word and look after Sophy's sisters, not to mention the father Reverend Horace, subsequent to Mrs. Crewler's death.

Finally, there is Agnes who reminds David why he lives and loves.
