CHAPTER 6
Pip has the desire, because of his love for Joe, to tell him the truth about who took the stolen pie. However, he fears Joe will think the worse of him, and that it will damage their friendship. Eventually, he realizes he is a coward.
Joe carries the exhausted Pip home on his back, having to stop often for the ill-tempered Mr. Wopsle. Pip wakes up long enough when they come home to hear Joe tell the company about the convict’s confession of robbing him of his food and file. The visitors try to figure out how the convict got into the pantry. They finally agree—with the exception of Mr. Wopsle—with Mr. Pumblechook’s theory that the convict had came down the chimney. Mr. Wopsle doesn’t believe Mr. Pumblechook is correct, but he doesn’t have his own theory.
