CHAPTER 14
Pip is ashamed of his home, fearing that his ingratitude will be punished. His home was never pleasant with his sister’s company, but Joe had been the redeeming consolation that made it bearable. His exposure to Miss Havisham and Estella changes his views, and he sees his surroundings as common.
Pip is dismayed as he considers his future as a blacksmith. However, he never reveals his discontent to Joe. Pip doesn’t run away because Joe has always been faithful to him. He is industrious because Joe is.
He fears encountering Estella, who would despise him. He thinks of her when Joe sings the ditty he sang with Miss Havisham and Estella.
