Olaudah Equiano (c. 1745 31 March 1797), [also known as Gustavus Vassa], born in Eboe province in the country now known as Nigeria, was instrumental in the abolition of the slave trade with the Slave Trade Act of 1807. After his enslavement as a child he bought his freedom and became an author, merchant, and explorer.
